Over the years, the world of network marketing has not built up a reliable reputation. This is down to one principle reason. It might be easy to take a guess at what this is. The truth is that many people have started to label this type of home-working business as nothing but a network marketing scam.

This isn’t because the network marketing industry is inherently bad. The industry is actually fantastic, but unfortunately it has been the marketing tactics involved that have created such a bad reputation. Distributors were often made to hunt down and bother every single person they knew or didn’t know in order to secure prospects.

It is because of these irregularities that the industry has been given the label of a network marketing scam. The marketing tactics seemed easy to follow, but in the end they damaged the reputation of the industry and gave it a very bad name.

One of the main theories behind these MLM marketing tactics is that you should always treat everyone you meet as a potential prospect. What this means is that every single person automatically becomes a target and one to be harassed even if they have no interest in your opportunity.

One of the most important marketing rules is to never attempt to sell something to somebody who shows no interest. If you do you will be labeled as a pest and give yourself and your business a bad name from the start.

A targeted market is key to your success. Even a very bad sales pitch will get you better results than putting out a sales pitch to a market of untargeted leads. An untargeted market is too random and is doomed to fail from the start. The fact is that people are not interested in buying something that is pushed upon them. It’s human nature. Unfortunately, these hit and miss tactics are what continue to keep the network marketing scam theories thriving.

In the network marketing world, duplication of your upline has long been hyped as being the key to building a successful and strong MLM business.

When Ann Sieg published the powerful report The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing in 2007, the reaction of many network marketers was expected to be hugely negative. Some even considered it a network marketing scam.

For a long time, MLMers struggling with their business were told that:

* their upline should be duplicated
* they should consider everyone near you as a potential prospect
* anyone can succeed, even those without a sales background – consider it as product sharing
* the business would be built for them once they joined

When success was not initially forthcoming many were told that they beliefs in the system were not strong enough. This was probably the most annoying statement of all.
