Working from home is something many people spend a lot of time daydreaming about. What could be better than not having to get up every morning, get dressed for the day, commute to the office and back again? The siren song of making their own schedule and working in their PJs gets a lot of people. But are there really any decent home based businesses out there, or is it all too good to be true? The answer is complicated. There are legitimate ways to make money from home, but there are also plenty of ways to get ripped off out there. Before you try to make your home based business dreams a reality, you need to learn the facts.
First, consider the bad news. There are literally thousands of home based business scams out there – they have spread like wildfire thanks to the internet. How do you know if the business you’re looking into is a scam? The number one red flag you should look out for is putting money into the business up front, but this can take so many different forms. Some companies offer to sell you a list of potential clients for whatever business they supposedly have going, and some companies offer to sell you a list of businesses that are looking to hire people to work from home.
Some companies want you to pay an up front start fee for a kit to get your business started – usually either stuffing envelopes or building small craft projects. Some companies want you to pay money to find out their “secret” and then want you to start spamming people to make money. Some companies essentially have internet based pyramid schemes going on. Whatever approach they take – they’re all a scam. They’re a waste of your time, they’re a waste of your money and in some cases, they’re illegal. As a general rule of thumb, you never want to pay any money to a company that offers to get you up in business. However they put it to you – buying inventory, investing in the company – it’s a bad idea. You’ll watch your business dreams and possibly your financial future all go down the drain.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that there are home based businesses that really work. The catch is that most of the time, you have to come up with them. Some companies in your area may allow people to telecommute, and these companies give you the security of working for someone you know. But if you can’t find a telecommute position, you may have to come up with your own home based business idea. Babysitting, freelance writing, virtual assistant work, catering – the list goes on and on. While these businesses may require a small initial investment from you, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that you’re not being scammed in the process.
Home based businesses can work. But you have to be cautious. Look closely before you jump in with both feet so you don’t get burned.
